Maryn Hanmer, MFT
Marriage and Family Therapy in Toronto
One of the major driving factors to pursue my Master of Marriage and Family Therapy was inspired by my personal mantra of wanting to “make a difference.” Throughout my studies and work experience, I have had the privilege to interact with clients, ask questions, share ideas, and renew my commitment to learning. As an energetic, creative and dynamic individual, I have taken the initiative to further my skills in leadership, mental health, and therapy by completing various leadership conferences and development courses. I have also benefited from a number of placements in health care administration and family and child services. My involvement has resulted in an indisputable commitment to working with children, adolescents, and adults and a sincere interest in the promotion of mental health initiatives. My driven nature to live a committed, passionate, and dynamic life, with continued learning, curiosity, and self-improvement forms the core of my mantra and shapes my own story.
My education, my story, and my volunteer and work experience have all added to my ideas concerning theories of practice. We all have a story to tell. When stories are clouded by judgment, or seen to be rebellion against the “natural” way of society, they begin to dominate as a negative role in an individual’s and family’s life. The child, adolescent, or adult and/or whole family then begins to be defined and confined by negativity. Knowing the unique relationships one holds with a problem and understanding a person apart from the problem helps to identify strengths and resources that would otherwise not be explored. Thus, if the negative stories are broken from judgment and dominating social narratives, the possibility for understanding, meaning making, and ultimately change, emerges.
Intuition, energy, compassion, and commitment, along with developed play therapy and counseling skills are the building blocks to my practice with children, adolescents, adults, parents and couples. Whether it is issues concerning behavioural disorders (ADHD, ODD, and the like), emotional disorders (ASD, depression, anxiety, and the like), or relationship issues, my role as a full family practitioner, a role I take great pride in, is to facilitate and promote change. I hope to be that person that allows you and/or your child the confidence to push for a better tomorrow and transform your story into a story that better suits your growth, learning, experiential processes, and relationship abilities.
Together, we can recreate your story of health and happiness.
